Viking X390 in Boca Raton: UL light stuck on, gate dragging on the ground
The gate had not worked in years.
It was an old steel gate covered in heavy wood planks on a property in west Boca Raton, out by the Everglades. Both leaves had sagged until they touched the ground. One would not move at all. The other opened about three feet and stopped.
The Viking X390 operator was not doing anything. The intercom was not sending calls. Nothing on this entry worked.
What I found on arrival
The weight was the first thing. The wood planks had turned the gate into something far heavier than the X390 was ever rated to move. The original steel hinges had bent under it, which is what let both leaves sag into the ground. I could not move the gate by hand, so no motor was going to move it either.
The operator had come loose from its mounts on the gate and was sitting disconnected.
And on the board, the UL light was on. It stayed on.
What I tested
A Viking will not move in any direction unless the board sees a monitored safety sensor connected to its UL input. That is a requirement, not a setting. So a UL light that will not go off means the board cannot see the sensor.
I tested the safety sensor. Then I moved it to a different input. No matter what I connected, the light stayed on.
That ruled out the sensor and the wiring to it. The board had a short in it and could not recognize that a sensor was connected at all. The motor wires were also loose.
What I offered
I started with the motor, because that decides a lot. If the operator could be saved, the rest of the job looks very different.
I offered him two options on the board: repair the one he had, or replace it. He chose a new board.
For the intercom, I gave him a few options. He picked the LiftMaster CapXM, the premium unit, because it looks amazing, and asked for Amazon Key so deliveries could get through the gate.
The gate took longer, and it should have. We went back and forth for a few days on designs until he found the one that fit the house: aluminum, dark bronze, tongue and groove slats. Light enough for the operator to move properly, which the old gate never was.
The job
The new gate was fabricated and powder coated to order, which took 15 days. Once it was ready, the job itself took one day with the team.
The new gate went up. The operators were relocated to fit it better. New board in, loose wiring sorted, limits set, edge screws adjusted. The CapXM was connected and tested, and the intercom directory was set up. Everything worked.
The part that surprised me
We saved the original motor kit.
After six years on those walls fighting a gate that was too heavy for it, then months sitting disconnected, the X390 ran so quietly that during testing I stopped a few times thinking it was stuck. I was standing to the side of it, expecting to hear it move. It was moving. I just could not hear it.
What a real gate tech knows
A UL light that stays on no matter what sensor you connect is not a motor problem. It is the board failing to see the input it requires before it will run.
Miss that, and a gate like this ends with a whole new motor kit on the invoice. This one needed a board, the right gate, and the operator it already had.
The result
A new aluminum gate, a new board in a six-year-old Viking X390 that is running better than it probably ever did, and a LiftMaster CapXM with Amazon Key. One day on site.

Common Questions
The UL light on my Viking board is always on. What does that mean?
A Viking will not move in any direction unless the board sees a monitored safety sensor connected. When the UL light stays on no matter what you connect, the board is not recognizing the sensor at all. On this job we tested the sensor and moved it to a different input, and the light stayed on. The fault was a short in the board itself, not the sensor.
My gate hasn't worked in years. Is the motor worth saving?
Often it is, and it is worth finding out before you replace the whole kit. This Viking X390 had spent six years pushing a gate far too heavy for it and then sat disconnected for months. After a new board and the right gate, it ran so quietly we had to look to confirm it was moving.
Can a gate be too heavy for the motor?
Yes. Every operator is rated for a maximum gate size and weight. The X390 is rated for gates up to 14 feet and 600 pounds. The old gate here was steel covered in heavy wood planks, well past that, and it bent the steel hinges and sagged until both leaves dragged on the ground.
Can you add Amazon Key to a gate intercom?
On the right system, yes. This customer chose a LiftMaster CapXM video intercom with Amazon Key added so deliveries can get through the gate without him being home to open it.
How long does a full gate replacement take?
The planning and fabrication take longer than the work. This customer spent a few days choosing the gate design, then fabrication and powder coating took 15 days. The job itself, new gate, motor relocation, new board and new intercom, was finished in one day.
